It has been a long time since I have heard those words and it puts a grin on my face thinking of the days of the CB radio.  Back when Smokey and the Bandit was playing in the movies and country music pounded out trucking songs hit after hit.

To talk on the CB first you had to give your self a “handle” to go by, my first one was the “Pepsi Queen” and the one after that was “The Virgin Lollipop”.  And I still remember my calling numbers of KATZ 0060, or it was something real close to that anyway.

I met a good amount of good folks on the CB and on certain Saturday nights all the CBer’s would meet at a local nightclub for a night of fun, drinking and dancing away, it was an opportunity for people to see the faces of the folks that they have been talking with when they had their “ears on” jawing on the CB.

I remember when all the 18 wheeler’s went on strike, the CBs were buzzing day and night all 20 and/40 channels constant chatter.  There were 18 wheelers lined up and down Route #95, all at a clean dead stop, what a mess that was, but the truckers meant business and held their ground and by golly they got what they wanted.

Since my kids are not little anymore I have gotten back into reading books again.  I have always loved reading but had to put that on the back burner while trying to raise my children.

I love reading all kinds of books and pick up the most unusual reading material here and there that keep my nose in at least one or two books at a time.  One of my favorites is one that contains hundreds of pages of savvy and intriguing information compiled for the world’s forgotten literary caste - those who read in the privacy of their privies (known as the bathroom for you city folk)  It is a collection of little-known facts that I find very interesting and would love to share on this blog time to time.

The one today that I read was pretty entertaining and I wanted to share it today.

DWARF TOSSING

A dwarf dresses up in body padding, a crash helmet, and a harness.  Then contestants hurl him across the room into a pile of mattresses.  The “winner” is the person who throws the dwarf the farthest.  In some contests, dwarfs have been thrown as much as 30 feet.  Makes you wonder why the dwarfs do it, they can make as much as $2,000 a night, that’s why.

It seems that this game was invented in an Australia bar back in 1985.  It later produced an offshoot of the game known as dwarf bowling.  A helmeted dwarf is strapped to a skateboard or mechanic’s creeper and rolled headfirst into bowling pins, which are made of plastic.

I remember back in 1987, the year our oldest daughter MC was born, a few American bars tried out this “sport” and it was a commercial success.  But the bad publicity - combined with lobbying by groups like the Little People of America-killed the sport.

Monday is the day that is the worst for me, and not in the typical way of most folks that are having to go back to work because the weekend is over and have to go back to work.

Hubby has had to give himself an injection in the stomach every Sunday night for the past six months, and the treatments make him seriously ill for several days after that, Monday being the worst.

The treatments keep him pretty much bedridden with severe flu like symptoms, which is something most of us only have to deal with maybe once a year, unless you are smart and get a flu shot.  Hubby has never wanted a flu shot, but this year he did get one, and hopefully he will get one every year after this horrible situation is over with.

So my Mondays are the pitts because he needs me near in order to take care of him until he gets to feeling better on Wednesday.  This puts a serious strain on the whole family but we are dealing with it one day at a time.

The good news is that last night (Sunday) was the last of his injection treatments and surprisingly he got up before I did this Monday a.m. and isn’t feeling the usual flu like symptoms, he isn’t feeling the greatest, mind you, but better than he usually does.  I hope tomorrow morning there isn’t a relapse in store for us.

One show that the entire family enjoys watching is Monk.  Last night was the last episode of the season, what a bummer.  I’m assuming that the writer’s strike made it a short season and now we are stuck watch more reruns for I don’t know how long.

It seems that the USA channel has put the shows older reruns on during the daytime, I have seen most of them but CR is getting the opportunity to watch a lot of the earlier that she did not get a chance to watch before, so she is a happy camper, but I have seen most of them several times already.

I thought I would check out the Monk website, I’ve seen it before several years ago and it hasn’t changed all the much, so it didn’t hold my interest for very long.

I hope that it doesn’t take too long for new episodes to come around for our enjoyment.  I mean, do we have to wait until Fall to come around, I sure hope not.

I have found that most people have a bit of Monk in them, it is funny when I get to say to someone in the family that they are being Monkish.  It makes you think.

And most people of aware of bats being able to find their way in the dark using an echolocation system, or sonar.

But then I found some other interesting bits of info:

Rattlesnakes have heat detectors (just behind their nostrils), which are so sensitive they can detect an approaching animal from temperature changes in the atmosphere.

And:

Migrating birds are among the most remarkable creatures, using natural navigational equipment as sophisticated as any modern plane.  In order to fly on track they rely on data from the following:

  • the movement of the Sun during the day, even when it is hidden by thick clouds
  • the position of the stars at night
  • the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field
  • checking landmarks en route and recognizing the same “home area” every year
  • identifying familiar smells

Animals are so fascinating, as a family we really enjoy watching the Animal Planet Channel at home, we always learn something that is interesting about our animal friends.

Our youngest CR, wants to be a dolphin trainer when she grows up and I think that she really will do her best to become one.
